Shadi Ghadirian
Born in 1974 in Tehran, Shadi Ghadirian is a photographer who continues to live and work in Iran. Her work is intimately linked to her identity as a Muslim woman living in Iran, through it she challenges international preconceptions of women’s roles within an Islamic state. Her images describe a positive and holistic female identity, humorously taking issue with the traditional roles by which women – both in the Middle East and universally – have been defined. She questions the role of women in society and explores ideas of censorship, religion, modernity, and the status of women. You can see some of her work currently being exhibited at the V&A in the ‘Light from the Middle East’ exhibition.
